Gender Inequality in the Film Industry

Today I am just going to leave you all with an image to think about, concerning the gender inequality in films as well as the film industry. If you frequent the internet, then you have probably seen this or an image that looks similar to it.

This image is from here, if you can't view it well on the blog. As well, there are other images that this one comes from that relate to the same inequality, but I thought this was important because we tend to think mainly about portrayal in film and not in the industry itself. The inequality of those who work on the films may be a main reason for these stereotypes being reinforced. Plus, I think a comparison between the two binary genders helps demonstrate the point more.

  1. I think that this is a very powerful image that really sums up your topic. I also think you make a really good point when you point out how the inequality in film production could attribute to misogyny or ideas in film content. Maybe this is an idea that can be explored further in your blog topic? For instance, it could be a good idea for an article review if you can find some scholarly opinions on the subject. I would love to hear more about that!
Also, it would be fascinating to see if this same issue can be seen in the music industry. Maybe one of the people doing a topic on music could look into this as well.

  2. This image pretty much sums it up. I agree women are underrepresented in the film industry other than acting. An example would be when the Oscars come on TV. The awards for best director, screen play, animation, or other awards that don't have to do with acting are generally reserved for men. I believe that this stems from stereotypes that these actresses portray in these films and that these stereotypes are displayed because there are more men directing and producing these films.

  3. I never really realized how underrepresented women were in the film industry, both on screen and behind the scenes. I was aware of the sexual representation of women in films, but I never realized how big of a difference it was between men and women. The picture is definitely an eye-opener, and changes my view of the film industry in a big way. I'll be sure to pay attention more the next time I watch a movie.

  4. The representation of women within the film industry is definitely an important topic to explore and pay attention to, because I think that it is generally not given much thought. I really appreciated that you hold the awareness about women being represented in a highly sexual way in films; and I think that, after seeing the lack of women working behind the scenes, it is easier to understand why the representation in the films themselves is often so sexual. By including more women in the production of films, I think that we would also see a significant shift in the way that women are represented in the films.

  5. A lot of us overlook what goes on behind the scenes in media. If we see something that we like on screen or in print, we often dont stop to consider that there might be something problematic in the creation.
This image reminds me of a short piece that I read somewhere, where a successful woman (I think she was a writer or a director) was turned away from a job before they even reviewed her work simply because they "already had a woman working in that field of the production." Not only are women very underrepresented here already, but many of the women who do have these jobs are apparently just fulfilling the diversity quota.
