The Women Against Feminism Movement

The Today Show's segment on anti-feminist women.
In this video, co-anchor Savannah Guthrie joins Soledad O'brien, the CEO of Starfish Media Group, and Abby Huntsman, a co-host on MSNBC's The Cycle, in talking about the growing counter-movement 'Women Against Feminism'. They show why women, especially young women, are against the feminist movement and their own thoughts on the matter.
Keep in mind that their arguments are one sided (pro-feminism), but imagine what it would have been like if one of them was anti-feminism and to have them share their arguments as well, if one side should convince the other...

  1. Before this class, the word feminism really left a bitter taste in my mouth. I had in mind a lot of the stereotypes that Abby Huntsman brought up in this interview such as "man hating." I believe all ideologies like this one can be taken to the extreme on both ends. I also believe that feminism was definitely most prominent and most needed before my time as Abby Huntsman said. Because of the feminists that existed before my time, I realize that I can attend EMU and participate in political decision making just as easily as any man. Although I wouldn't be able to hold a strong argument in a debate of feminism, I have warmed up to the idea. Knowing that feminism covers equality of all sorts, I may actually call myself one in certain contexts.

  3. I think it is important that everyone try to keep in mind that the definition of feminism is very individualized. To me, feminism reaches a broader audience than just angry lesbians. Promoting feminism, in my opinion, would help people of all sorts; men , women, and those whose gender identities are non-binary. Feminism seems to me to mean that every person should be able to mold a future for themselves regardless of the social roles they are expected to fill. Men should be able to stay at home while the women goes to work, women who dedicate their lives to being homemakers should be seen as members of society who are just as valued as working men, and a person of a non-binary gender shouldn't be fired from a job they can do well because of their identity. It is hard for me to imagine anyone being against that. However, I have to remind myself that some people have only been exposed to negative stereotypes about feminism, or maybe believe that to be feminist means being a victim. Because of all of the historically negative connotations of feminism, I think it is imperative for the feminism movement to try and re-define itself to the public. How diverse the movement has grown is certainly helping with this!
