Hate Crime and the LGBT Community- Bridget Thomas

Read this article titled, Hate Crime Laws Don't Prevent Violence Against LGBT People. This article was really helpful for me as it explained the history, purpose, and implications surrounding hate crime laws. It also explains the reason as to why some LGBT people oppose hate crime laws, and why some people support them. This article was very thought-provoking for me, especially when it brought up the concept of justice in relationship to things like equality, fairness, and punishment. The article contains much information, read it to see which part or parts spark your interest!

  1. This reminded me of a bill that recently passed through the House in Michigan that could make it legal to deny services to certain individuals due to religious reasons. This means that a baker can choose not to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. I'm pretty sure that this is /already legal./ In the same session, they squashed a bill that would have added LGBT individuals under the umbrella of the nondiscrimination act. Just some more food for thought I guess. :/

  2. It's interesting to see someone actually discussing the connecting of the dots of 'hate crime laws being made' and 'deterrent of crime due to said laws' because I had always thought "oh good, now it's safe!" when that's not entirely the case. What really had me thinking was the part where they discussed how the death penalty isn't a deterrent for murder because I believe in the death penalty so to see that research shows it's not really effective is something new to think about, and the same goes for these laws for the protection of LGBT people.
