Minnesota Considers Transgender Athlete Policy

This video was posted on December 3rd, 2014, and it talks about schools in Minnesota debating whether or not to allow students to play on sports teams based on their preferred gender identity, rather than based on their birth assigned sex and gender.
People in Minnesota who are opposed to allowing transgender athletes to play alongside cisgender athletes have even gone as far as to run full page advertisements in the newspaper in an effort to persuade the general public that transgender athletes should not be allowed to play on teams with cisgender individuals.
The main thing that stood out to me was that those opposed to trans inclusion tended to focus on not allowing trans girls to play alongside cis girls, while completely ignoring trans boys playing alongside cis boys. To me, this omission of concern regarding trans boys inclusion shows that there are elements of sexism playing into the oppositions argument.

  1. I was really interested in this debate and wanted to know what the results of the voting was. I looked it up and the transgender athletes now have the right to pick their team based on their own preferred gender. They won 18-1. I am so happy they won! They deserve the right to play for their own gender and I hope that other states follow the example set by Minnesota. Thanks for sharing!
