Legal Victories for Trans-Individuals

There are times when the progress of the trans-rights looks minimal, when it feels like prejudice will always prevail. Because the purpose of my blog topic is to bring constructive criticisms and victories of the trans-rights movement to light, I would like to present a number of instances in the past few months where the Trans-Rights movement has taken giant steps forward.

The first article seen here talks about how, in November, the Malaysian court system recently decided to overturn their past decision that cross-dressing is unconstitutional. From a country that is known to be fundamentally religious, this is a huge victory.

The next article seen here, which is a bit more complicated, talks about how the Civil Rights Act has had an unintentionally positive effects on the Trans- Rights movement over the years. For instance, it was what help pass anti-discrimination laws in favor of helping trans-individuals keep their jobs despite any prejudice of their employer.

I hope all of this made you all a little more optimistic today!

  1. Hi Sarah! This did make me have a little more faith in humanity. I think that it's great that countries are trying to break down prejudices against other people's expression of their gender identity. It's also great that people are recognizing that by telling people that they can't cross-dress, they are oppressing these people's right to express themselves. It's nice that people can learn to become more accepting of others gender identity and expression. Hopefully the rest of the world will follow these examples so that everyone can feel comfortable being who they truly are.

  2. It is always nice to see some good news! Thanks for sharing some celebrations! I was actually feeling rather disheartened because of some of the videos I was finding in regards to my blog topic, which is transgender athletes, so it was really nice to see some positive steps in the transgender rights movement. I think it is especially great that you were able to find something from Malaysia, because I think that a lot of times it can be easy to forget that equality is something that is being fought for on a global basis, not just here in the United States.

  3. It's wonderful to be able to see victories like these. These victories show that progression is happening, that people still are trying to improve themselves, and that governments are becoming more liberal. It's great to see Malaysia granting more rights to their citizens and allowing them to dress more appropriately for individuals.
